When Thanasis P, an illustrator who was asked to draw a faithful portrait of Thanasis Vengou, has difficulty “capturing” the essence of the popular actor, he “comes alive” on the drawing board and tells the illustrator his life — Thanasis to Thanasis. From the Phaliro of the Occupation to Makronissos, where his acquaintance with Koundouros introduced him to the world of cinema, a fascinating journey unfolds that has accompanied generations of Greeks. A journey strewn with triumphs and disasters, achievements and mistakes, tears of joy and pain. The “galley of his life.”
With the graphic novel THB - The Galley of My Life, award-winning comic book creators Spyros Derveniotis (Shark Nation, Mana Raver) and Thanasis Petrou (Gra-Grou, Giannoulis Chalepas), attempt to capture the life and work of the iconic artist and human being, Thanasis Vengou (1927-2011). With an introduction by musician Phoivos Delivorias, an epitaph by writer and director Yannis Soldatos, as well as a seven-page depiction of his entire oeuvre, the reader comes into contact with an iconic artist, reminiscing about his experiences, thoughts and philosophy.
He will remind us of the man who took on the role of the handyman and the hermit, the crazy amusement park, the bald agent, the swindler, a Vengos for all jobs, always with a deep soul. Thanasis Vengos' work could not and never will be able to fit into molds or be given meaning under the light of realism. It will always belong to the spectrum of surrealism and the unorthodox. It will always be under the Gaze of Ulysses and will exclaim: "Silly nature? You are alone, I am alone too. Take a cookie!". When everyone told him that "you are not like us. And you will never be like us!", he chose the difficult path of development and recognition. “Dream like a child, live like a madman, love like a human being, the world is small and we are passersby,” he used to say, and with this graphic novel he invites us to embark on the great journey of his life.
