Why are there different categories for Citadel modeling paints?

Citadel modeling paints are divided into 7 different categories, each with a different use:

  • Base: The Base category paints have strong pigmentation and are usually used as a foundation for other paints.
  • Layer: Layer paints have less intense pigmentation than Base paints and are used on top of them to enhance the color.
  • Shade: Shade paints are designed to settle in the recesses of miniatures, creating shadows on the models.
  • Dry: Dry paints are used to highlight details on miniatures and are an effective technique for quick drying of paint.
  • Contrast: Contrast paints can be used over Base colors to give a glossy finish and shade to the miniature.
  • Technical: Technical paints add 3D effects to miniatures, such as blood, snow, mud, etc.
  • Spray: Spray paints are used to evenly color your miniatures before applying Base paints.
