On November 1st, 1907, the New Orleans police received an urgent call from the swamp and lagoon district south of the city. The people who had settled there—mostly primitive yet good-natured descendants of Lafitte’s men—found themselves at the mercy of a terror brought upon them by an unknown thing that had approached unseen in the night. It was, apparently, voodoo—but of the most dreadful kind they had ever encountered; moreover, some women and children had disappeared from the moment the abominable drums began their endless beating somewhere deep within the haunted black forest, into which no inhabitant ever dared to venture. Delirious cries and unearthly howls could be heard, chants that chilled the blood, and devilish flames danced—until, the terrified messenger added, they could bear it no longer.
