Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island. Introverted, sickly, and a lover of literature – and astronomy – from a very young age, Lovecraft spent large periods of his life isolated from the outside world. He began to write seriously just before he reached adulthood, and in 1923 he began publishing his short stories in the magazine Weird Tales. He once said that “all my stories are based on the fundamental assumption that ordinary human laws and human emotions have no force or significance in the universe.”
