Eighteen-year-old Lauren, the daughter of a Black pastor, born with a syndrome of hypersensitivity to the emotions of others, feeling them as her own, records in her diary everything she experiences in this dark dystopia of hyper-capitalism and climate change.

Then suddenly, overnight, total destruction strikes: she loses her entire family to arsonists, products—or victims themselves?—of the same sick society. Forced to flee northward, she embarks on a dangerous journey on foot, driven by her desire for a safer place and a new beginning.

The dystopia that Octavia Butler, author of Bloodchild, described 35 years ago is not far removed from some situations today. Parable of the Sower, the first book in the dystopian series Earthseed, takes place in the 2020s, the decade when the spark of the old world will either extinguish, plunging humanity into total darkness, or remain alive, igniting something new.
