Genotype: A Mendelian Genetics Game is a strategic board game set in St. Thomas' Abbey, where Gregor Mendel conducted his groundbreaking experiments on pea plants. Designed for 1 to 5 players aged 14 and up, the game combines worker placement and dice drafting mechanics, offering a playtime of approximately 45 to 90 minutes.
Objective:
Players assume the roles of research scientists collaborating with Mendel to collect and validate experimental data on pea plant traits. The goal is to strategically breed plants, analyze genetic traits, and advance research to achieve scientific eminence.
Gameplay Overview:
The game unfolds over five rounds, each consisting of three phases:
- Worker Placement:Players assign workers to various tasks, such as acquiring pea plant cards, modifying parent plant genes, gardening, conducting research, staking phenotype claims, gathering tools, or positioning for advantageous dice drafting.
- Dice Drafting (Plant Breeding):
- Dice are rolled to simulate plant breeding, with outcomes determined by Punnett Squares representing genetic combinations.
- Players take turns selecting dice that correspond to the traits needed to complete their pea plant cards or to further their research.
- Research Upgrades:Utilizing accumulated resources, players can acquire upgrades, such as additional plots for planting, extra dice slots, more workers, or hiring assistants to enhance their research capabilities.
Key Features:
- Educational Integration: The game incorporates fundamental concepts of genetics, including heredity and Punnett Squares, providing an engaging learning experience.
- Strategic Depth: Players must plan their research wisely, manage resources effectively, and adapt to the dynamic outcomes of dice rolls.
- Historical Context: Set in the authentic environment of Mendel's experiments, the game offers a thematic immersion into the history of genetics.
Components:
- Pea Plant Cards depicting various phenotype traits.
- Custom dice representing genetic traits.
- Worker tokens for task assignment.
- Punnett Square boards to determine trait outcomes.
- Research upgrade tiles and tool cards.
Winning the Game:
At the end of five rounds, players tally points earned from completed pea plant cards, phenotype claims, research advancements, and other achievements. The player with the highest score is recognized as the most esteemed scientist.
