Darth Vader, who was portrayed by Sebastian Shaw in the original Star Wars trilogy, was a Force-sensitive Human who served the Galactic Republic as a Jedi Knight and later served the Galactic Empire as the Sith Lord Darth Vader. After his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi, he sustained serious injuries and was unable to survive without the helmet and mask of his suit or his meditation chamber, a life support pod.
