The name Tatooine comes from the desert of Tataouine, in Tunisia (site of a disciplinary garrison, the Bat d'Af, during the French presence), the country where the scenes of the humidity farm of Owen Lars, Luke Skywalker's adoptive uncle, were filmed in the first film. This location was again used for the second trilogy produced by George Lucas. However, many other scenes were filmed in Death Valley in the United States.

A planet that appears in five of the seven films in the saga, it is of crucial importance to the course of the saga. In Episode I, the Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn makes a stopover there to repair his ship, where he discovers Anakin Skywalker, the future Darth Vader. After ten years of apprenticeship, he returns to Tatooine to save his mother from the Tuskens, but arrives too late. At the same time, he meets his beautiful family.

Obi-Wan Kenobi takes refuge there at the end of Episode III after the massacre of the Jedi, looking after Anakin and the late Padmé Amidala's newborn son Luke, whom he entrusts to his uncle and aunt Owen and Beru Lars.

In Episode IV, nineteen years later, Luke Skywalker is still living on Tatooïne with his aunt and uncle on the Lars farm. Dreaming of adventure and danger, he meets the Rebellion droids C-3PO and R2-D2, who are sent on a mission by Princess Leia Organa (the latter's twin sister) to find the old Jedi general Obi-Wan Kenobi. After several adventures, Luke finally meets Obi-Wan, who now goes by the name Ben Kenobi. After the massacre of his family by a horde of Stormtroopers, Luke travels to Mos Esley with his companions and they take off from the planet aboard the Millennium Falcon, a pirate ship captained by Han Solo and his Wookie co-pilot Chewbacca.

Four years later, Luke returns to his home planet with Leia, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian and the droids to raid the lair of the tyrannical Jabba the Hutt, in order to free Han Solo from his carbon block, who had been kidnapped by the bounty hunter Boba Fett. The mission, which resulted in the death of the Hutt and his henchmen, was a brilliant success.

Mos Eisley is one of Tatooine's main cities. It is home to many pirates, bounty hunters and smugglers, whose activities are facilitated by the presence of the astroport and the absence of the Republic and Empire (Tatooine is a planet on the outer rim).
